How to get the perfect concrete look with paint. An easy way to give ceramic Dollar Tree mushrooms a cool concrete inspired makeover.
Happy Dollar Store DIY Day! For those of you who are new around here, the first Monday of every month I share an affordable Dollar Tree makeover. It can be anything from a simple organizing project to an easy decor makeover. My goal is to share inexpensive and affordable Dollar Tree projects that you can use to organize and decorate your home.
This month, I was inspired by little ceramic mushrooms that I found in the decor section of Dollar Tree. I thought about giving them a wood inspired makeover, but as soon as I saw aged concrete mushrooms online I knew I had to transform them to look like concrete.
SUPPLIES NEEDED TO GET THE PERFECT CONCRETE LOOK

- Dollar Tree mushrooms
- 400 Grit Sandpaper
- Paintbrush
- Paintbrush
- Mineral Colored Chalk Paint (Walmart)
- FolkArt Acrylic Paint (Real Brown)
- FolkArt Acrylic Paint (Classic Green)
I started with three little ceramic mushrooms from Dollar Tree. I loved the size and shape of them, but the color didn't quite fit my style of decor.
With these aged concrete mushrooms as my inspiration, I raided my paints and grabbed three colors that I felt would give the perfect aged concrete look.
(Real Brown, Classic Green, Mineral)
HOW TO GET THE PERFECT CONCRETE LOOK WITH PAINT
STEP ONE:
Lightly sand the ceramic mushrooms with 400 grit sandpaper.
STEP TWO:
Apply two-three light coats of Mineral chalk paint, allowing the paint to dry fully between coats.
STEP THREE:
Before the last coat of Mineral chalk paint is fully dry, blend in a small amount of Real Brown paint to the tops of the mushrooms. The goal is to give the mushrooms a little depth and texture.
You can stop here, but if you like the look of aged concrete you can take the makeover one step further.
STEP FOUR:Lightly dry brush Classic Green and Real Brown randomly around the mushrooms then dab both colors onto the mushrooms using the tip of your paintbrush. You want the colors to blend together to create a naturally aged look.
I love how these Dollar Tree aged concrete inspired mushrooms turned out. Transforming them to look like concrete was such a fun, easy and affordable painting project.
