It's time for another edition of #MonthlyDIYChallenge! I always look forward to our monthly challanges and couldn't be more excited about this months theme, organizing and storage solutions! January tends to be month where everyone is purging and organizing, so this couldn't come at a better time.
My son is Lego obsessed and received more legos for Christmas than I can count. I admit, I thought it was great that he started getting into legos until I realized I would be the one putting most of them together and keeping them organized. Seems that he enjoys playing with the finished trucks rather than the actual building part. Hmm.
So far, I've managed to keep all the different pieces together by placing each set in plastic bags with their insturctions. The real challenge was storing the completed Lego trucks so that they didn't get damaged. I can't tell you how many times my son has come to me crying to fix one of his broken trucks or find a lost piece. Lego storage was definitely needed!
First, I decided what size box I wanted then cut my wood accordingly. Once I had all my pieces cut I used wood glue to attach the sides to the base of the box.
I had planned on shooting in a few nails with the nail gun, but the wood glue held surprisingly well that I didn't worry about the extra support.
After the glue was completely dry I stained the wood with my favorite Minwax Jacobean stain, dry brushed a coat of Martha Stewart vintage decor paint then sanded the entire box to give it a distressed look.
I opted for custom handles using rope, screws and metal straps (found in the electrical department).

Owen was so excited about his new box and couldn't wait to neatly park all his newly built Lego trucks inside. I love the fact that the caster wheels allow the box to easily roll right under his bed, perfect!

I definitely need this in my life!!! BRILLIANT!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, that's SO perfect! What a great way to keep those completed trucks intact :)
ReplyDeleteThis is too cute! I can see my girls using this to gather their toys and put them away. How fun would this rolling storage box be for that boring chore! Michelle @ Dandelion Patina
ReplyDeleteI am IN LOVE with this project, Katie! I think you have inspired me to make some of my own rolling storage boxes for under my son's bed. The finish is gorgeous and I love the rope handles as well. Thanks for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, Katie!! Such a great idea for kids so they can store them and still use them!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea for the kiddos to store and keep their toys portable! Love it! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSO cute!! What a great idea to put it on wheels, especially for legos!! I love the box you made too, the paint job is just perfect. :) It'd make a cute tray, too!
ReplyDeleteSuch a good idea! I love how you painted it, and adding the wheels to roll it under the bed was genius!
ReplyDeleteAhh! I love this so much! My little boy is too young for legos now, but I'm sure we'll be in your shoes in no time. Definitely pinning this for when that time comes :)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I love all of your wood projects, but this one is officially my favorite!!! Love the distressed look and LOVE the addition of rope handles!! Perfection!
ReplyDeleteThis is perfect! I especially love the paint/stain job you did.
ReplyDeleteI would for sure try this at home for under the bed storage.

Katie, I love it! I'd love one or two of these around the house! The handles are the best part!!

Katie this is such a cool project!! I love the finish you achieved with the stain and paint together! Thanks for sharing at Fridays Unfolded!! I will be featuring you this week :)
ReplyDeleteGenius, Katie! Too bad my kiddos have outgrown the Lego stage, but I can think of tons of other uses for this!
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable! I am always surprised at how easy a simple wood box is to make -- so many possibilities!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute! How are the rope handles holding up? Are they purely decorative, or can you actually pull and lift the box by them?
ReplyDeleteThanks Sara! I have had to fix one handle after my son tried to pick up the box with it. They are mostly decorative, but they work great for pulling the box in and out from under his bed. I just wouldn't pick up the box with them.
