Rustic Dining Table Planter Box

Ever since I built the rolling storage box for my son's Lego's I've wanted to build another box for our dining room table.   It's been completly bare and begging for attention ever since putting away the Christmas decor.   A rustic planter box seemed to be the perfect solution to brighten up the table and bring a touch of Spring to the space.

There are a ton of different ways to build a planter box, but I chose to build mine using a piece of 1x6 and 1x4.
I used the 1x6 for the bottom and the 1x4 for the sides of the box.  I attached the boards to each other using wood glue, clamped them into place until the glue was dry then reinforced them with a few screws.
As always, I stained the box with my favorite Minwax Jacobean stain, gave it a few light coats of paint then sanded it for a distressed look.  (more detailed instructions, here

I also added a few handles that I picked up from Home Depot for about $2.00 a piece.

For the inside of the box, I slipped small pieces of floral foam into painted mason jars and added a few Spring stems.

There are so many great uses for this box and I can almost bet you it will be traveling around our home.  How cute would it be filled with utensils for a party or for storing kids art supplies?
