Thrifty DIY Mudroom Reveal

The mudroom is complete!!!

Let's just take a minute to let that sink in.

.....

.....

.....

You have no idea how long I have waited to say those words!  This room has been a work in progress for over a year and I am thrilled that it is FINALLY complete.  I say the word "complete" loosely since this is just a temporary makeover until we tear down the wall and extend our kitchen. When that time comes the mudroom floor will be ripped up and replaced with real hardwood floors. The walls will be painted, crown will be added as well as built in cubbies and a bench area.  Until then, I am calling the mudroom complete.

Some of you may be wondering why we spent money completing this space if it's only going to get torn apart in a year or two.  Well, when you have two kids and a dog walking on bare plywood, tracking dust and tiny wood pieces in the house, you quickly start to lose your mind.  To me, spending a few hundred dollars to make this space useable was worth every penny.

Let me back up and start from the beginning.

This was our house before we started the addition to add a mudroom, oversized 2 car garage and expand our kitchen.

My husband and I (okay, mostly my husband) acted as GC and organized permits and contractors. We saved a TON of money by doing this as well as completing a lot of work ourselves.  We also know a lot of people who work in many different fields who gave us great deals on wood, framing, electrical and siding.  Thankfully, my husband knows how to work an excavator so he excavated the land and laid all the dirt and gravel himself.  He even mixed concrete and set the footers and rebar.

Once we got to the point where the drywall was installed in the mudroom things kind of halted.  We had issue after issue with permits and it took months to finally get signed off on many items.  We lived with bare plywood floors for months and it was not pretty.

It was a very happy day when I FINALLY got the go ahead to screw down the subfloor and lay the vinyl plank floor.  You may also notice that I whitewashed the brick.  It was a free project and made such a difference in brightening the space.

I have to say though, painting the doors was by far the biggest change.   It gave the space the dramatic contrast it needed.

Finally, just last weekend we installed the trim and I was able to call this makeover done.

The green metal drawers are perfect for corralling keys, loose change and little odds an ends.
And what room makeover of mine would be complete without a number four and a picture of my kids?

It's amazing how much adding a mudroom has changed our lives.  No longer are we crammed in the kitchen every morning trying to put on our jackets, and gathering our books and bags for work and school.

    1. Thanks girl! Yes, the addition has been great as far as the space we gained, but it came with a lot of stress and headaches. I'm just glad it's almost done! I can't believe you don't have a HomeGoods! I am there almost every week and buy 80% of my home decor from there. You need to come visit and we can hit up all the HomeGoods in the area!
