Burlap and Flannel Christmas Wreath {Monthly DIY Challenge}

It's time for another Monthly DIY Challenge!  This month's theme was "wreaths" and to be honest I'm not really a wreath kind of girl.  I'm also not one to back out of a challenge, so I bit the bullet and threw something together.  

Is it even a surprise that I ended up using my favorite flannel?   I've used this same red and gray flannel throughout this year's Christmas decorating and don't think I'll ever get sick of it. I mean really, what's cozier than soft flannel?  Add in the pop of red and you have the perfect combination.  

I started by wrapping some leftover burlap around a simple embroidery hoop. I love that these little wood hoops have so many great uses other than cross stitching.  

I simply knotted the end around the hoop (this is just to hold the burlap in place), twisted the burlap then wrapped it around the hoop.

Once I got to the end, I untied my knot and tied the two end pieces together.  I tucked them into the twisted burlap then hot glued them in place.

I thought it looked kind of plain and needed a pop of red, so you guessed it, I grabbed some flannel! I cut down about an inch then tore my flannel into strips to fray the edges.  You can always cut the flannel with scissors, but I like the look of raggedy, frayed edges. 

 I twisted each flannel strip then wrapped each piece around the burlap, hot gluing them in place.

I finished off the wreath with a bit of greenery and a simple "Merry Christmas" sign made from card stock.

To be completely honest, I'm not sure I love it as much as I hoped I would.  I do think it's pretty, it's just not my taste.  So, down it will come and my simple boxwood wreath will go back in it's place. Maybe I'll have better luck with the next challenge :)
