It's the second Wednesday of the month, which means it's time for another Monthly DIY Challenge!
This month's theme was "metallic paint" and I decided to use my favorite metallic gold spray paint to make a couple wood photo plaques for my recently updated gallery wall. They ended up being a great addition and I love that I can easily swap out the kids pictures or artwork.
I kept my favorite saw unplugged for this project and opted to go with precut wood instead. I found mine at Michael's, but you can probably find the same wood at any craft store. The wood comes in various sizes and is perfect for those who don't own a saw.
If you are really observant, you'll notice that the clips and labels in the "after" picture are not the ones pictured above. I often start projects with a plan in my head, which quickly changes as I start putting things together. If I'm not 100% happy with how things are turning out, I raid my craft drawers until I find something that works better.
In this case, I ended up finding bigger clips and labels that were much more proportionate with the size of wood I was using.
I attached the new hardware with gorilla glue then made custom labels in PicMonkey.
I was originally going to stop here, but the plaques seemed a bit too plain. They needed a little more bling, so I sprayed a few gold brads and added them to each corner.
To avoid splitting the wood (which I did anyway!) I predrilled holes with a small drill bit. You see that drill bit in the picture above? Yeah, don't use one that big. It ended up splitting the wood and I had to move to a smaller bit. #bloggerfail
If you're making these to hang on the wall, you'll also want to add these hooks.
Now it's time to check out the other fabulous metallic projects.
These are seriously so sweet! I love the bold black/gold/natural color combo. Those little labels just get me - I think they're my favorite part!
