A huge thank you to Modern Masters for sponsoring this post.
It's time again for another Monthly DIY Challenge!
This month, we were lucky enough to work with a super cool product, Modern Masters Metal Effects! In case you're not familiar with this product, it allows you to give just about any surface the perfect patina (aka rusty) finish. How cool is that?
The kit comes with everything you need:
Primer
Oxidizing Iron Paint
Rust Activator
Sealer
2 Paint Brushes
2 Stirrers
Direction Booklet
I chose to rustify (I think I just made that word up) a scroll wall hanging that I had laying in our yard sale pile. I purchased two of them years ago, so I thought why not try and update one with a cool rusty finish.
I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant to paint over the perfectly good wrought iron finish with the brown primer paint. I had faith in the product, but it sure wasn't looking too hot.
I ended up applying 2 coats to ensure I got a good rusty finish.
After the primer was dry I applied 2 coats of the iron oxidizing paint.
Once that was dry I sprayed (make sure you turn the nozzle to spray and not stream, lesson learned) the entire piece with the rust activator. It will start "rusting" as it dries.
How cool is that? Doesn't it look like it's been sitting outside for months?
Since I only used the metal effects kit on a small piece I still have a ton of product left for other projects. I'm thinking of painting an old wrought iron outdoor side table. It's already rusting, so this would just make it look like it was meant to be that way.
As for the metal scroll, it's now hanging above the old window in our dining room.
This turned out so great! It looks perfect next to your old window.
