Happy Monday!
I made some major progress on the basement this weekend and can't believe the makeover is almost complete. Thank goodness I didn't tackle this project for the One Room Challenge or I would have been WAY over schedule, haha. I still have a lot of little projects to complete (staining and installing the quarter round, paint touch ups, decorating and finishing the board and batten on the steps), but I can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel!
Today, I'm talking all about the fireplace wall and how much I love my new mixed metal bookcase.
When I first started planning the basement I had the grand idea of building a custom built in cabinet and shelves in the nook next to the fireplace. My husband has a surround sound that includes a big obnoxious Bose acoustimass module that I was not allowed to get rid of. You see that big black box on the floor to the right of the fireplace?
My plan was to buy an inexpensive unfinished upper cabinet and build a custom wall unit similar to this. I had everything planned out and even went as far as buying the cabinet. Things then came to a halt when my husband said the acoustimass had to be open and not confined in a cabinet. Ugh, don't you just love when a wrench is thrown in your great plan?
That's when I decided to find the perfect affordable mixed material shelf to use in the corner. The hardest part was finding one that had the right height between the shelves and was the right color and width. I finally found the perfect one and anxiously waited for it to arrive.
After cooling off a bit I decided I still wanted to keep the shelf. That meant my husband would have to rerun all the wires and move the box over next to the T.V. Let me tell you, he was thrilled with my new idea.
I love the farmhouse industrial vibe that the bookcase gives to the basement and could not be happier with how everything worked out.
All the items that I used to style the shelf were collected from around the house. How cute are these dog bookends? I got them a few years ago from HomeGoods on clearance and spray painted them white.
Can you tell I have a thing for cameras? My dad recently bought a huge box of old ones at a yard sale and was nice enough to let me snag a few.
***TIP*** If you're using a throw strictly for decoration try getting fabric by the yard instead. A yard of flannel was much cheaper than buying a new throw.
Next up on the list is to finish the board and batten on the steps and install the quarter round. Hopefully, I'll be able to wrap this makeover up in the next few weeks!
The new shelf is gorgeous and you've styled it so perfectly Katie!
