The Easiest Way to Make Affordable Farmhouse Signs

A super easy to make affordable farmhouse signs without fancy cutting machines!

Do you remember the time I made signs out of foam board?  They were seriously the easiest signs I have ever made and are what started me on my love for sign making.  I don't own a Cricut (what is wrong with me?),  so all the signs I make are super easy, including this affordable gather farmhouse sign.

It's also made from foam board (bought for a dollar at Dollar Tree!) and involves minimal tools and effort.  I used my favorite mitre saw to cut the wood dowels, but you can make this sign with a simple X-ACTO knife or small hand saw.  When I say easy, I really do mean easy!

- Black Foam Board (I bought mine from the Dollar Tree)
- (2) 1/2" square dowels
- Ruler
- Rotary mat (optional)

I did all my cutting on a large rotary mat, but you can always lay your foam board on cardboard or another flat surface.  foam board and vinyl letters for DIY sign
You can make your sign any size you wish, but since I was using 4 inch vinyl letters I decided to make the height of mine 5 1/2".  I measured the foam board using a ruler then cut the board with an X-ACTO knife.

Supplies for diy farmhouse sign
Since fall is fast approaching and I'm in the middle of fall decorating I went with a simple "gather" sign to tie in with my fall decor.

After I was done carefully laying my vinyl letters onto my foam board I cut the square dowels using my mitre saw then stained them using Minwax Special Walnut.  As I mentioned before, if you don't have a saw you can easily cut the dowels with an X-ACTO knife or small hand saw.

Once the stain was dry (make sure it is fully dry for best results) I used wood glue to attach each trim piece to the foam board.  See, I told you it was easy!

To avoid nailing holes in the wall, I hung the sign using command poster hangers.
