A Pair of Multi Drawer Nightstands Get a Fresh New look

A little paint and new drawer hardware completely transform a set of dated nightstands.

A couple weeks ago, I picked up a set of cute little nightstands that I found on Facebook Marketplace.  I asked the normal questions I ask every time I buy furniture online and almost passed them up because the seller said they didn't have dovetail drawers.   I was really bummed but, the price was right and I loved that they had multiple drawers, so I decided to buy them anyway.  When I picked them up I was pleasantly surprised to find out they DID have dovetail drawers!

As soon as I got home I took the nightstands out of the car and started working on them right away.  I went with my go-to Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore and finished them off with a light distressing, finishing wax and new bronze pulls.

SUPPLIES USED TO TRANSFORM DATED NIGHTSTANDS
(Affiliate links have been used)

- Sherwin-Willaims Iron Ore (Emerald Line)
- General Finishes Satin Finishing Wax
- Oil Rubbed Bronze Dresser Pulls
- 2 1/2" Angled Purdy paintbrush
- Dewalt Orbital sander
- 100 and 120 grit sanding pads
- Minwax wood filler
- Straight edge
- Screwdriver
- Simple Green
- Paper towels

I tend to paint pieces with multiple drawers black then add gold bin pulls or label holders.  Although, these nightstands had some curvy legs that I didn't think would fit the faux card catalog look.  I could have cut off the bottom and rebuilt the base like I did with THIS side table, but I was going for a much quicker and easier makeover.Dated multi drawer nightstands before
I removed all the dated hardware, including the two pulls on the side.  This left me with a few holes that needed to be repaired.

I love using Minwax high performance wood filler for filling large holes because it dries hard in 15 mins, is sandable within 30 mins and will not shrink or crack like some other wood fillers.

After the wood filler was dry I sanded the nightstands and drawers with 100 grit then 120 grit sandpaper.

I wiped them clean then applied two coats of Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore (Emerald line), lightly distressed them for a natural look then sealed them with General Finishes satin finishing wax.   I knew I would need to update the pulls, so I decided to go with inexpensive bronze drawer pulls.  They were the perfect finishing touch for these beautiful little nightstands.

I love how these little nightstands turned out and I'm so glad I didn't pass them up.  They would make such a lovely addition to any bedroom and I know they will end up in a good home soon.

  2. Gorgeous!! How long does it typically take you to finish a makeover? I have several half done furniture projects in my garage because I lost steam. :(

    1. Thank you! I hear ya. I have many half completed projects because I lost interest. Although, now I’m kind of forced to turn furniture around quickly since I have the booth. I’d say, a typical makeover takes between 2-3 days. It all depends on if I need to make repairs or if more than 2-3 coats of paint is needed.

  3. Do you use a brush or a foam brush to apply your paint.

  6. Fabulous make over! I love them handles and the color. They work well together. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m a novice with plans to make over a 3 drawer dresser into a entertainment center for a small and seldom used (family room) tee vee. Your post is informative and the visuals help too.
