Before and after thrift store makeover! Let's give a modern makeover to a thrifted and outdated rain boot planter!
I list items I'm currently hunting on my phone for when I go thrifting. I review and update the list often, so the list is fresh in my mind and I can quickly scan the aisles while shopping.
When searching the aisles for items on my list, I also scout for unplanned things I may not be looking for, like an ugly rainboot planter.
The rain boots sat haphazardly among other random planters but stuck out like a sore thumb.
It had seen better days and sported an interesting sponge paint job in one of my least favorite colors purple. It was something anyone would easily glance over and leave behind, but I picked it up and immediately saw potential.
SUPPLIES NEEDED TO UPDATE RAIN BOOTS PLANTER
- Rain boot planter (I found mine at a thrift store for $3.49)
- Small paintbrush
- Neutral craft paint ( I used Almond Latte and Crushed Stone)
- Black paint (I used Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane in Tricorn Black)
- Craft paper or cardboard
Colors can quickly turn you off from purchasing a thrift store find, but I focus on the material, structure, and shape. If something can be updated with paint then it should be considered.
The rain boots had a hideous (in my opinion) paint job, but it was nothing that couldn't be changed, especially when the planter was only $3.49.
I raided my paint cabinet and found three colors I thought would work.
I couldn't find the perfect greige paint color, so I mixed two lighter colors I had on hand to create a color I was happy with.
The planter had texture, so there was no need for sanding. I just gave the planter a good washing then applied three coats of the greige color I mixed to the bottom and top of the boots.
After the paint was dry, I painted three coats of Tricorn Black in Satin on the rest of the boots. This gave the boots a shine that beautifully mimicked the shine of real rain boots.
I'm a vintage lover, so I had to add a vintage touch to the planter with an old register flag. They make a great little addition to pots and planters.
I wasn't specifically looking for a rain boot planter, but I'm glad it caught my eye as I scanned the aisles.
Great makeover on the boot planter! Would love to see a post of the other items you found. Just a quick photo or two, or three, would be great@
